Per esempio il ritmo circadiano che induce la liberazione di un ormone importantissimo per mantenere intatto il ritmo sonno-veglia, cioè la melatonina, si potrebbe alterare, provocando insonnia e un aumento dei fenomeni depressivi. Tutto quanto abbiamo descritto potrebbe però non verificarsi affatto, infatti se l’inversione polare avvenisse lentamente sia gli animali che l’uomo riuscirebbero ad adattarsi. Ed ecco il punto: l'inversione dei poli sicuramente avverrà, ma in quanto tempo? La differenza sta tutta qui.

Se l'asse della Terra dovesse ribaltarsi completamente, tutto il pianeta sarebbe squassato da uragani e onde di marea. Ci sono indizi che conforterebbero questa teoria. I grandi depositi di carbone in Inghilterra indicano che un tempo quelle regioni dovevano avere clima tropicale, con grandi foreste e paludi.
